The new kitchen is done (almost)

After 2 months of rebuilding, tearing apart and putting back together my kitchen is remodeled!  Wow--is it nice!  Amazingly I filled up all the new cupboards and realized how much kitchen stuff I have!  Now I can easily get to it and I am ready to cook for all my visitors.  Its all new floor in the kitchen and dining room, all repainted and new lighting and cupboards-wow!  The best part is my gas and electric stoves are right next to each other now (they used to be in different rooms!) so if the electricity is off (frequently) I can easily switch to the gas stove. We remodeled part of the pantry and have more room there too.  It is amazing and a BIG change from before!

They shorted us formica tops and so 2 areas still need the countertops which will were bought when Bob and Rose went to town on their way to airport.  He was marking and cutting tops in the parking lot of the airport!

It has been great having Rose and Bob Coibion with us a again and this time their grandchildren (2 of 7) came to help too--Brendan and Andrea.  Bob and Brendan kept busy remodeling the kitchen.  I kept Rose and Andrea busy with computer projects, ART cards and moving me back into the new kitchen!  It was such blessing to me to have them here and we are already planning Bob's 9th trip here when we will be building a new rehab and administrative building in the future!

During February we also had 2 medical students from Ohio State University, Jeff Burrows and Meghan Beddow.  We kept them busy seeing patients, going out to ART clinics and doing deliveries.  They left for home Saturday after a visit to Victoria Falls for the last few days.  Hope they can tolerate the "cold weather" in Ohio after a sunny and warm summer here!  They were hoping for an early spring at home but doesn't look like that!  We wish them good luck with the upcoming match time that they get the residency they want!

We had a surprise visit by Flo Khosa from Seattle who was instrumental in helping us get solar into our hospital with her brother Gerald.  Gerald installed our system and came out to work on fixing it.  Flo was in the country and came along to see Chidamoyo.  We are happy our solar backup is now up and working after almost 6 months down--it is a big help to us!  We are so thankful for this project which was sponsored by Friends of Chidamoyo.

On Friday the 27th of February I rushed into Harare to see my doctor after an all night pain bout which I diagnosed as a kidney stone.  The bumpy road we travel seemed to have jarred it lose and by the time I reached Harare I felt much better, just sore!  A CAT-Scan showed no more stones, so the next day turned around and came home and have been fine since!  I knew our terrible road was good for something!

Our doctor has been gone since the 1st of March for a workshop in Harare and won't be back until the 17th of March.  This has been a bad week with lots of emergencies and I have sent the car with patients to Karoi 3 times this week--ectopic pregnancy, repeat C/Section and a bowel obstruction!  I think I will be ready for a vacation after this!

The Coibions left on Wednesday with a stop for 2 days in Dubai on their way home to CA.  They kept talking about hitting Krispy Cream Donuts and In and Out Burger on the way home from the airport!  Wish I was with them!

    You must be really happy to see the improvements and the results of all the hard works in your kitchen. Managing to change everything from the themes, cupboards and countertops is really an achievement, and I couldn't imagine how excited you were with your kitchen’s new look. Thanks for sharing!

We were so happy to visit with Dr. Batsi Chiuerki and wife Charity and their three children who were visiting from Perth, Australia on the 7th of July.  They moved to Australia 12 years ago after working with them as our doctor at Makonde Christian Hospital.  It was so good to see them and with their children grown up!  We had a wonderful visit with them in Harare for a few hours. Michael Major came home from University last week and he flew into Harare from South Africa.  We got to enjoy a lunch out and he drove me home from Harare last week.  My "driver "is back on his holiday so need to take advantage of it. On Saturday the 8th of July we celebrated Caorlyn Mereki's 20th biorthday with a taco dinner and cake.  We also celebrated Michael's 24th birthday from May since he ad been away at University and we didn't get to celebrate in person with him.  Everyone had a great time at the party! What a week!

We have two new visitors that arrived this week and started working with us. Liz graduated from high school in May and is starting college in Portland, OR in January. She is a missionary kid born in Zimbabwe—her name is also Tariro and she left when she was 3 years old for Cambodia and eventually Viet Nam and IN. Lauren is from my home church in Sebastopol and is taking a semester off from college in Chico, CA to help us out. It has been a busy week—I hope they don’t think it always like this—if it is I quit now! We had gone into Harare last Friday afternoon (27th August) after work (Dr. Zimudzi, Carolyn Mereki and I). We got there in time to meet up with Major, Lori and the 2 girls who had arrived Thursday afternoon. We enjoyed some peri-peri chicken and ice cream! Saturday morning we were all off for the wedding of one of our doctors, Vernon Murenje and his bride Christine. It was held in a beautiful location on the waterfront of a lake. Covid-19--The world has changed

Throughout the world we are all facing big changes in our life.   Many are on self-quarantine; many are staying home because their state has been put on lock-down and all of us are trying to avoid getting this flu. It has hit Zimbabwe.   We have 5 confirmed cases—1 death and 1 doctor at Harare Hospital, in Zimbabwe.   They supposedly have only tested 150 people and as all of you are aware the results take 5+ days.  The tests are only available in Harare. We have few test kits in the country, no PPE and so nurses started a country wide strike today which means most hospitals are totally shut down.   Our local district hospital—which is our only other hospital in the district besides us—sent a message today to not send any patients as they were closed!   With no PPE you can’t blame people who make little money stopping work.   We hope it will cause some action from the government and not for them to continue to be quiet!
